3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
Comments:
Joshua chooses 30,000 brave, mighty men for a special mission against Ai. In wartime, one must wisely allocate one's forces. Proper use of one's best fighters can make the difference in victory or defeat.
During the English Civil War between Parliament and King Charles I, parliamentarian soldiers—including Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army—were issued "The Soldier's Catechism." According to the catechism, besides being Christians, soldiers must be courageous and skillful in combat—"might men of valour":
A. 1. That he be religious and godly.
2. That he be courageous and valiant.
3. That he be skillful in the military profession.
