So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.

Joshua chooses 30,000 brave, mighty men for a special mission against Ai. In wartime, one must wisely allocate one's forces. Proper use of one's best fighters can make the difference in victory or defeat.
