War and Alliances (Joshua 10:6, 7)

Joshua 10:6, 7

King James Version (KJV)

And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

Comments:

The Israelites' allliance with the Gibeonites prompted the Israelites to come to their aid when they were in need militarily. This situation seems to have implications for the lawfulness of military alliances between nations for mutual protection, or, at the very least, for one nation to defend a nation that has more or less surrendered its sovereignty to it. (The Gibeonites refer to themselves as Israelites' "servants".)
